We award a total of 6 cups named in honor of significant contributors to the Regatta
and the programs at the University of Rochester and RIT.
The George M. Angle and Elaine P. Wilson Cups
The top men's and women's open eight teams with the
best times in the distance and sprint races combined
will receive trophies. To the men will go the George M.
Angle Cup. When the University of Rochester rowing program
was founded in 1981 as an undergraduate club sport, George
Angle volunteered to serve as the group's unofficial mentor and
fund raiser. Angle is a Rochester native who joined the university
in 1963 as vice president for business affairs and associate treasurer.
He was named vice president for public affairs in 1971 and senior executive
in 1987. Angle, who retired in 1989, is a life-long rowing enthusiast
who still actively competes in rowing.
The women's open eight crew with the best combined
times in the distance and sprint races will receive the
Elaine P. Wilson Cup. The late Elaine P. Wilson's interest in
Rochester's rowing program dated back to crew's infancy. She
made an initial contribution to help launch the club sport program
and she rescued it from a financial crisis in 1982. At many critical
points in crew's development, Wilson gave not only encouragement but
also helped buy equipment needed to train and to travel to competitions.
Always interested in the competitive aspects of the team, Wilson was known to rise even before the sun for several chilly rides in the university coach's launch. The University of Rochester and all Head of the Genesee Regatta fans are grateful for her dedication and support.
The Kate Louise Cups
The Kate Louise Cups are trophies awarded to the teams with the best times in the distance and sprint races combined for the men's and women's collegiate eights. The collegiate division includes the smaller Division II and Division III programs.
The Kate Louise Cups are named in honor of Mrs. John C. Trahey, the great-aunt of Arthur A. Gosnell, chairman of the board and CEO of Stonehurst Capital LLC. Before founding Stonehurst, Gosnell was a senior executive and director of the Research Institute of America, Inc.
He is a graduate of St. Lawrence University and holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
The Gosnell family has been extremely supportive of the RIT crew program.
Arthur Gosnell is a member of RIT's Board of Trustees as is his father Thomas, who also served as chairman from 1987 to 1992 and is now chairman emeritus.
The Bernfield/Bodenstedt Cups
The John Bernfield cup is presented to the winner of the Men's Heavyweight Fours, while the Margaret Bodenstedt Cup is given to the winner of the Women's Open Fours.
John S. Bernfield is Director of Performance Enhancement at University Sports Medicine
in Rochester, NY and former head athletic trainer at the University of Rochester. He came to the city in 1968 to row at an Olympic Trainiing Center held here.. During his rowing career, Bernfield won more that 20 national championships in all classes.
The late Margaret Fallon Bodenstedt was the first coach of the RIT novice crew and with her husband, current RIT head coach Jim Bodenstedt, founded RIT Crew. She was an active member of the Rochester Rowing Club and participated as coach for three years in the Bausch & Lomb Regatta, known today as the Head of the Genesee Invitational Regatta.
